We are a class from the Faculty of Business and Economics, at the University of Hong Kong. For about a month, we are living, working and learning on the island of Guimaras, in the Philippines. Gracious local families are hosting us, as we work with a variety of small local businesses. Our goals are to consult with and share business theory with our business partners while we learn the practical aspects of running a small enterprise in a developing country, and to learn and grow personally as we share culture, experience and daily life with our rural Filipino host families.
Each host family is paired with two students, and they share morning and evening meals and often weekends together. During the days, the students work with their assigned businesses in teams of 2-3 students per team. The businesses that our students are consulting with include: an organic farm, a travel agency, a computer sales and service business, a ferry service cooperative, a cashew production and retail shop, and an ecopark/resort complex.
